Kudzu Narrative Intelligence Brief: "Hate Crimes" Trending in US Congress

Over the last 24 hours, the phrase covid-19 hate crimes has seen a 1,200 percent increase in public conversations. An analysis of the narrative hate crimes indicates the increased use of the phrase is predominantly associated with yesterday’s passage of the Covid-19 Hate Crimes Act. Although the bill received bipartisan support in Congress, Democrats have largely led the amplification and advancement of the hate crimes narrative since yesterday. Specifically, two House Democrats – Mondaire Jones (D-NY) and Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) – amplified an NPR article covering the bill’s passage and bipartisan support and a number of Democrats posted related content to their personal websites and blogs. Republicans have largely avoided amplifying narratives associated with hate crimes, as well as using the phrase in published content.
